Phoenix skies, the city and gardening

My small sacred fireplace/altar that I made with broken tiles and cups. Perfect to fill with candles and incense and pictures of Timothy Leary and such! A small reminder to ” Turn On Tune In and Drop Out” when we enter our home.

The perfect Autumn day at the downtown post office. Love that mackerel sky!! What a great day to collect my mail!

Absolutely breathtaking. The crows cawing overhead with their call bouncing off of the nearby buildings made for even a more magical experience. These are the things that make it easy to breathe in the center of a huge metropolis, like Phoenix.

Across the street from the post office is The Westward Ho. A real Phoenix landmark and was quite the fancy place to be, back in the day. Personally, I still think that it is “quite the place to be”. It was also in the opening scene of “Psycho”.

Where the ladies still where fur coats and pillbox hats, gloves and loads of sparkling jewels.

Free Spirit with flowers in her hair!

My sister’s garden. In the beginning of the growing season this year. I can’t wait until harvest! She always shares…generously! mmmmmm

More organically grown foods.

A small bird sanctuary. A place to wet their whistles.

Have a seat! An abundance of Agave!

Pomegranite.

Urban garden. (my sister’s)

Inner city paradise. This is one of the views from one of the patios at my sisters. It is so peaceful and in the heart of downtown Phoenix (even more gorgeous at night).

Sacred space full of zen.

A space in the shade to set your spirit free and to rest your body and mind.

The beginning of fall and the glory of sugar skulls

The beginning of Fall is announced at our house with these funky pumpkins that my friend AND local artist, Lynne Bonnell, makes. I called her “The Pumpkin Lady” before I knew her (and it stuck….sorry, Lynne!). I am completely in love with her pumpkins, which are made from various, gorgeous fabrics and topped with real pumpkin stems. They come in all sizes, colors, textures, etc. We leave them out all year, but, when it is officially Fall, they are displayed in our huge, rusted metal cornucopia on our big dining table. We still don’t have enough in our collection.

Then begins the sugar skull mania in our home.

Sugar skulls descend upon us and fill every crevice in our kitchen. It is a treat for the senses.

A fabulous sea of sugar skulls. Before they become embellished.

They go on forever! We become like family before the process is complete.

Bring on the icing and foil and feathers and sequins and anything we can find! This is a family affair.

My niece, April, in sugar skull bliss. It is far too easy to fall into a meditative abyss while decorating these treasures. It is truly wonderful experience that can eliminate an entire afternoon span of time into a few minutes. Where does the time really go?!

A few finished works of art.

Tonto National Bridge and a cabin in the Bradshaw mountains

Tonto Natural Bridge Hiking Trail. It is a little steep, to say the least, but it is the most incredible place when you get to the bottom. The rocks are pretty slippery, so you really have to watch your step.

We are family. Ralph, Sarah and me at the bottom of the Tonto Natural Bridge after the long hike down. Sarah was quite the little nature baby.

The magical trees in the forest on the Bradshaw Mountains.

A magical cabin deep within the Bradshaw Mountains in northern Arizona.

Tempe Festival of the Arts

David and Roselyn at the Tempe Festival of the Arts, in Tempe, Arizona.

“Tryin’ to Make a Livin’ ” These are the most amazing street musicians that I know. I first met them at the Laguna Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, California.
www.sawdustartfestival.org
They are the most wonderful New Orleans Blues singers around.

David, Roselyn, Sarah and me. Feel the love.

My little puppet!

Sarah, plugged in at the Tempe Arts Festival in the very early 80’s. She was listening to music at the booth for Soundings of the Planet (www.soundings.com). Their “music is out of this world”. Sarah grew up on their music. It is perfect for all times.

Pictures from the 70’s, my daughter, and magical Arizona sunsets

Sweet Jane’s Magic Bus. Unlike the song, Sweet Jane still has her sparkle and is living happily ever after in paradise!

My first car (when I was 16). My dad reupholstered it in light yellow velour/soft corduroy. It was sweet. And, of course, if this car could tell stories………

This is was my first Magic Bus.

Teen photo. Remember “Sun In” and laying in the sun with baby oil or coco butter all over your skin?

Wheeler’s Inn. Famous truck stop in California off of the I-10. Also where parts of PeeWee’s Big Adventure was filmed.

Beautiful hippie skirt and jacket. This was taken in San Francisco by my dear friend, Jane. Hippie Chicks Rule!

Antelope, Oregon, here I come! No offense to anyone, but this was my Halloween costume. I had a tape recorder under my shirt that played chants wherever I went.

Magical Sarah, casting spells early on.

The ever so lovely Kari, a kindred sister at “work” at Threadheads in Prescott, Az. Cool, hippie place.

This is Chloe, the beautiful dreamer dog. Mamma Kitty is our 18 year old cat. We have been friends for a long time!

Sarah Rainbow Brain. Precious girl. That is a rainbow pinata from one of her birthdays.

Stormy skies in Arizona.

Magical, psychedelic Arizona sunset ~ with ghosts.

Photos of the early years at Arcosanti

Arcosanti in the early 1980’s.

Photos taken from the trail below the main buildings.

These are stairs that lead to the top of this dome, earth cast structure.

These underground earth casted buildings must be experienced to appreciate them fully.

This is the area where the windchimes are made.

This is one of the festivals that they used to have in the 1970’s. This particular festival was headlined by Jackson Browne.

The ampitheater was located at the base of the little mountains that the buildings and structures of Arcosanti are built on. This photo is not very clear.

This is the stage before Jackson Browne came on. Notice the kicked back security guards in front of the stage. Later that evening they were the ones who stopped three gunmen who tried to create chaos amongst this peaceful group of beautiful hippie people.

At some psychedelic point in the day, I pretty much stayed in one place! You can tell by the photos that I didn’t go far from where I was sitting!

Another photo from the same place, but different head space.

Early years of Arcosanti in black and white.

Balloons.

Musician on saxaphone. These photos were taken when I was a teenager and the names and exact details of the people and events escape me.

Weird Holly’s Farm

The Wonderful Weird Holly’s Farm. A magical tree house sort of place. This is the Main House on the property.

The front door and the front deck. We have had some fabulous times on that deck! Great parties and just good old fashioned visiting.

The catwalk around the upstairs bedroom.

Stained glass windows around the rounded living room.

Natural resources are the best.

Daytripping through Jerome and Sedona

Gorgeous January drive to northern Arizona. Sedona is in the distance.

On the way to Jerome. The beautiful ghost town of Jerome, Arizona. A very high, trippy place.

The main drag in this artsy, quaint ghost town. On one of the corners you will find The Spirit Room, a popular hangout. It is said to be haunted, as is most of the town.

Winter in Oak Creek Canyon.

Oak Creek

A place to meditate. Breathe slowly and deeply.

Funky downtown Phoenix community garden

A magical, funky community garden in the middle of downtown Phoenix. Tucked away inside a historical neighborhood. It is part of the “Weed and Seed” program.

Creative and beautifully functional gates made out of bicycle rims and spokes.

Awesome mosaic wall bordering the community garden. These artistic details are found throughout the garden along with beautiful, metal sculptures.

Cool, old apartments overlook the “Jardin de la Gente”

In true southwestern style, this garden-park is complete with an outdoor oven.

More beautiful scenes from Hawaiian paradise

Rainbow Falls in Hilo.

A hot pond/pool by the ocean.

The road on the edge of the world.

“And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.” - The powerful Pacific Ocean.

A very organic place, where it is visible to the naked eye that every living thing is a host to another living thing.

For some things, there are no words.

Life outside the window above the bed where I slept. It was incredibly luscious.

Outside the front door at Alicia’s. There was much too much to capture in photos. It’s truly Eden, indeed.
